About the Artist
Sanya Ojikutu is a Nigerian-born visual artist working and residing in the Washington DC metro area. Sanya is well known for his hard-hitting political cartoons during the brutal military dictatorship years which earned him several national media awards for being the best cartoonist in Nigeria. He has participated in a variety of solo and group art shows in Nigeria, United Kingdom and United States.
Sanya is currently exploring wide ranging themes based on Yorùbá deities, mythology, cosmic references in ancient Ile-Ife, including notable characters from the literary works of Amos Tutuola and D.O. Fagunwa in his paintings.
He recently added a voice of his cultural heritage to the hull of the ship in the Middle Passage exhibit at the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington DC.
